Breakthrough And New Creators


Established in 2012, the Breakthrough Award recognises an individual performer who has ‘broken through’ to the big time in the year in question.

Meanwhile, 2022 sees the introduction of the Emerging Creators Award.

Recognising UK-based, online talent who have a distinctive voice or/and online programme that offers audiences something unique and new. 

Nominees must have a significant online following, be UK based or UK commissioned, and have consistently created original content.

Nominations for the BPG New Creators Award follow the same process as other awards; please see the ‘How the Awards Work’ section of the BPG website.

2023: Jack Rooke, writer, Big Boys (Roughcut Television for Channel 4)

2022: Rose Matafeo, Writer and Actor, Starstruck (An Avalon production for BBC Three and HBO Max)

2021: Emma Corrin for her role as Diana, Princess of Wales in The Crown, Series 4 (Left Bank Pictures / Sony Pictures Television for Netflix)

2020: Ncuti Gatwa for his role in Sex Education (Netflix)

2019: Alex Scott for sports broadcasting on BBC and Sky

2017/18: No Award

2016: Aidan Turner for performances in Poldark (BBC One) and And Then There Were None (BBC One)

2015: Harry and Jack Williams for writing The Missing (New Pictures, Company Pictures and Two Brothers Pictures for BBC One)

2014: Jamie Dornan for performance in The Fall (BBC Two)

2013: Adam Hills for presenting The Last Leg Paralympics 2012 (Channel 4)

2012: Olivia Colman for performances in Rev (BBC Two) and Exile (BBC One)
