Voting opens on 34th BPG Awards

Voting is now underway on the 34th Annual BPG Television and Radio Awards.

Voting is conducted in two stages – first every member has the opportunity to nominate a first and second choice in five programme and four personality award categories. You can make your selection on the Voting Page by Clicking Here. You will have received your Member Password by email. If you think you did not receive this please Email Julian.

  • In any of these categories, you can vote for a first and/or a second choice, but you cannot vote for the same programme or person twice. This is a change since last year, agreed at the AGM.
  • Another change is that you can now vote for returning series – provided the series in question was shown for the first time in 2007 (ie – the 2007 series of Have I Got News for You is eligible but a repeat of a Morecambe & Wise series from the 1990s is not).

Please Remember – ONLY members who take part in this first round nomination process, by getting their votes in on time, are invited to vote in the final round to decide the winners.

To help with your nomination, there are reminder lists of programmes and talent on the BPG website, but these are only a SELECTION from the total output in 2007 of the five main terrestrial and digital TV channels. They should NOT be regarded as comprehensive, and other programmes not listed are still eligible for nomination, as long as they meet the criteria of a new programme first broadcast in 2007.

This year, we’re bringing back the Factual Entertainment Award, which is for the more light-hearted end of the factual spectrum. The more serious stuff can then compete for the single & series documentary awards. There will clearly be some crossover in terms of the programmes listed in different factual categories, so don’t regard them as gospel. Use your discretion in deciding which programmes you’re nominating from the factual sphere, are more ‘entertainment’, or more ‘documentary’.

We also welcome nominations on the form from all members for the BPG Innovation Award, which carries a broad definition for what “innovation” can mean, in relation to our core awards. Your nomination could be for something new in programme content, for a technology related innovation, or for something else that’s breaking new ground in the broadcast arena. Please make a nomination or two on the form, with a few words explaining your choice.

The BPG Radio Awards and BPG Multichannel Award will be judged by members specialising in those sectors.

The Harvey Lee Award for an outstanding contribution to broadcasting will be awarded by the BPG committee, as will the BPG Award for Innovation.

The Awards will be presented, at our usual lunchtime ceremony at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, on Friday April 4th 2008. Please put this in your diary now. You’ll be invited to make bookings nearer the time.
